There are so many “Yellowstone” prequels in the works that you might be forgiven for not realizing quite how huge the story of Bass Reeves is going to be.

Here’s the rundown: Bass Reeves is a real historical figure. Born a slave in 1838 in Arkansas, Reeves went on to become one of the first black U.S. marshals, according to Britannica. Much of Reeves’ life is largely unknown; some reports suggest he served for the Confederacy during the American Civil War, while his family claims he fled into Indian Territory between 1861 and 1862, the site noted.

After the war, Reeves was a guide for government officials interested in navigating through Indian Territory, Britannica noted, somewhat like Sam Elliott and LaMonica Garrett’s characters in “1883.” Reeves was commissioned as a deputy in 1875. He apprehended more than 3,000 outlaws and killed at least 14 during his career, the site continued.

“1883: The Bass Reeves Story” was initially greenlit for “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan and producer David Oyelowo in 2021, and it was later absorbed into the Sheridan-verse. Oyelowo is the only cast member to be announced for the series so far, and he will take on the title role, TV Guide reported. (RELATED: Here’s A Rundown Of Every Upcoming Taylor Sheridan Show)

The release date has not been announced just yet, but it’s anticipated some time in 2023, according to Parade. It’ll likely be a limited series of six episodes, the outlet noted. Sheridan will direct the first two episodes, and filming is expected to start after the”1923″ prequel concludes.
