Renowned fashion designer Issey Miyake died of liver cancer Aug. 5 at the age of 84.

The Japanese designer was known for his avant-garde designs, some of which are housed in the most prestigious institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, according to CNN. His uniquely designed, signature pleated pieces defined his iconic style and his designs were sought after by some of the world’s leading famous faces.

Issey Miyake, the Japanese designer whose name became a global byword for cutting-edge fashion in the 1980s, died on Aug. 5. He was 84.

Miyake was very private and kept much of his personal life out of the spotlight, according to the New York Post. Representatives from Miyake’s office confirmed that a funeral service had already been held with only his immediate family and close friends in attendance, according to CNN. As part of his final wishes, the famous designer requested that no memorial ceremony be held.

Miyake’s pieces were so luxurious that they were considered by many to be collector’s items, according to CNN. Steve Jobs, who wore Miyake’s black turtlenecks almost exclusively for decades, was among the famous figures loyal to his designs, City News reported.

Miyake is said to have developed more than a dozen fashion lines including Issey Miyake for men and women, where his main pieces were sold, according to the Calgary Herald. Later, the designer also incorporated watches, bags and signature fragrances.

The fashion industry is reeling from the loss of an icon and will forever cherish Miyake’s contributions to the world of design.
